10/19.- Alexandria, Midan Tahrir

we are now in one of the busiest squares in alexandria: midan tahrir. this square used to be known as the square of the consuls in the 19th century because most foreign ambassadors lived here. in 1873 a statue of mohammed ali was placed at the center of the square (you can see it at the right of the photo). from then on, the square was known as midan mohammed ali. in 1882 all the buildings were destroyed in a british air raid. from this square nasser announced the nationalization of the suez canal. => next
