The mighty Macedonian, Alexander the Great, came to Egypt after
conquering Greece and selected a small fishing village on the
Mediterranean coast Rhakotisto establish his new capital. He ordered
the Greek architect Dinocrates (332-331 BC) to build the city which, immortalizing Alexander's name, quickly flourished into a
prominent cultural, intellectual, political, and economic metropolis,
the remains of which are still evident to this day. Alexandria
was the second capital for the roman empire after Rome.It used to
have 2 of the 7 wonders of the world; the Great Library and the
light house. The library was burned by the romans so that the library
in Rome would become the largest of that time. On the other hand,
the light house was destroyed by an earthquake.......
It was the renowned capital of the Ptolemies, with numerous
monuments. It was the site of the Lighthouse, one of the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World, as well as the Great Library. It was
along these shores that history took a tragic turn at the time of
Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian.
